Description of Programme
This Little India Walking Tour allows participants to fully explore the early beginnings, cultural practices, heritage and characteristics of one of Singapore’s main constituent communities, the Indians. The understanding of the motivations and struggles of the early Indians in Singapore and their subsequent settlement into mainstream Singapore is traced and explained, showing insights that may surprise many Singaporean Indians today. Itinerary – Shree Lakshminarayan Temple, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Belilios Lane – Trades Murals, Residence of Tan Teng Niah, Tekka Market, Little India Arcade, Indian Heritage Centre, Abdul Gafoor Mosque Specific Learning Points • Singapore’s multi-cultural heritage • Singapore’s development and the role of the Indians • Multi-racialism and the building of a nation • Quirky facts about Little India
