Description of Programme
This Kampong Glam Walking Tour allows participants to fully explore the early beginnings, cultural practices, heritage and characteristics of one of Singapore’s main constituent communities, the Malays. The understanding of the motivations and struggles of the early Malays in Singapore and their subsequent settlement into mainstream Singapore is traced and explained, showing insights that may surprise many Singaporean Malays today. Itinerary – Royal Cemetery at Jalan Kubur, Masjid Malabar, Madrasah Alsagoff Al Arabiah, Malay Heritage Centre, Gedung Kuning, Sultan Mosque, Bussorah Street coffee shop, Arab Street, Haji Lane/Bali Lane Specific Learning Points • Singapore’s multi-cultural heritage • Singapore’s development and the role of the Malays • Multi-racialism and the building of a nation • Quirky facts about the Kampong Glam Precinct
