Description of Programme

The Civic Singapore Walking Tour gives the participants a chance to view many familiar landmarks, buildings and sites to learn about their historic significance to appreciate the journey Singapore has undertaken and the road ahead. The topics discussed include war, religion, colonialism, trade, identity, industry and services and nation building. This eye-opening walk will shed light on the roles of key institutions of modern Singapore like Parliament and Supreme Court. Itinerary – Civilian Memorial, St Andrew’s Cathedral, National Gallery, Padang, Raffles Landing Site, Singapore River, Fullerton Building, Boat Quay, Parliament House, Supreme Court Gallery Specific Learning Points • WW2 and its impact on Singapore, civilian suffering and casualties. Post-war reconstruction and the road to independence. • Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-cultural roots, religious diversity • Trade as the lifeblood of Singapore; industry and services now driving the economy • Meritocracy and incorruptibility – two undergirding traits and the role of various state organs and institutions
